Important Update for UPI Users: New Rule to Take Effect from April 1, 2025

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced a new regulation that will impact UPI services linked to inactive or reassigned mobile numbers. This rule will come into effect on April 1, 2025, and aims to prevent fraudulent activities and unauthorized transactions.

Understanding the New UPI Rule

As per the new directive issued by NPCI, mobile numbers that remain inactive for a period of 90 days will be automatically unlinked from their associated bank accounts. The primary goal of this initiative is to enhance security within the UPI ecosystem and mitigate the risks of financial fraud.

Why Are Inactive Numbers a Security Concern?

Telecom service providers often reassign inactive mobile numbers to new users. If an old user’s UPI-linked bank account is still associated with a reassigned number, the new owner of that number may gain unintended access to UPI services. This could lead to unauthorized transactions and financial losses. To address this risk, NPCI has taken a proactive step to delink inactive numbers from bank accounts.

How This Affects You

If your registered mobile number becomes inactive and remains so for over 90 days, you will no longer be able to use UPI services. This means that transactions through popular payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm will be disrupted.

Steps to Take Before the Rule Takes Effect

To avoid any inconvenience, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Verify Your Mobile Number: Check with your telecom service provider to ensure your registered number is active.
  2. Reactivate If Necessary: If your number has been deactivated, contact your telecom operator to get it reactivated.
  3. Update Bank Details: In case your number cannot be restored, update your bank records with a new, active mobile number to continue using UPI services without interruption.

Regular Monitoring of Inactive Numbers

NPCI has instructed banks and UPI service providers to review and update their records of inactive numbers on a weekly basis. This ensures compliance with the new guidelines and minimizes the risk of fraud.

Going forward, NPCI plans to implement additional security measures, including explicit user consent for linking or updating mobile numbers with UPI IDs. This move will further enhance user protection and ensure a safer digital payments ecosystem.
